Small Laundry Room Makeover

E-Design

If you’ve been around here for a while, you might have picked up on the fact that cozy modern Scandinavian style is my jam for interior decorating! I wanted to replicate that style in my laundry room after already designing the rest of our house in that style since that really helps make a home cohesive.

The first step to any makeover: a plan! I love creating e-designs because it helps you visualize the final design AND saves you time and money. If you don’t know how to create an e-design, please reach out to me for some help! I would love to work with you.

Small Laundry Room Makeover

Right now this room is builder grade, meaning, it’s very basic with one long wire shelf. It doesn’t really have any special characteristics to it.

As always, the first thing I did was gather inspiration for our small laundry room makeover. I heard a great tip the other day: we shouldn’t only draw inspiration from Pinterest and Google, but also from our travels or the books we read.

All that to say, for this e-design, all my inspiration was completely online!

Laundry Room Inspiration

Based on my inspiration photos, you can tell I gravitated towards a white and wood look with pops of black and brass.

One thing I realized in all of my inspiration photos is that each laundry room had a window in it, but mine does not.

This matters because natural light affects how bright a room is and how colors turn out. I also realized that most of these rooms are larger than my laundry room.

Laundry Room Cabinets

Before starting the design, I had to take into consideration that my washer is top loading and the dryer is front loading.

In my plan, I want to remove the wire shelving and install cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. This allows for more storage, and we can hide everything!

Based on the size of my laundry room and my washer/dryer, I can fit two 30 in wide and 36 in tall cabinets. Since I have been designing all of my rooms in this creamy cabinet color with brass hardware, I wanted to continue that in my laundry room as well.

Mudroom Cabinetry Options

I did consider putting a cabinet in between the machines and building a table top for over the dryer; however, I realized that would take up quite a bit of space.

However, I still wanted a table top for folding clean clothes. I decided to put this on the other wall, so I can store our laundry baskets underneath.

I love the basket look so I found some awesome woven laundry baskets that have dividers in them and a removal linen bag to wash. After measuring, I decided I could fit three of these baskets.

Laundry Hangers

Above my folding table, I needed a solution for our clothes that we hang to dry.

To my surprise, there are quite a few options for this online. I found some options that are great for hangers, and some that are great for laying your clothes to dry flat. Here is what I found:

For hanging our clothes up to dry, I decided on brass hangers to complement the hardware I will use on the cabinets.

With these, I can fit three on the wall with 5-7 hangers on each one. This allows for 15-21 hung clothes at a time!

A few years ago, I thrifted a drying rack, and it’s been great for when we don’t want hanger marks in our clothes. I am going to use it next to the washer and dryer and get another to hang on the wall.

All in all, with the wall hangings, the drying rack, and the wall drying rack, we should have plenty of space to dry clothes.

Rugs for the Laundry Room

I currently have vinyl flooring in my laundry room, but I’d like to add tile, which is a great material to have in the laundry room in case of water spills.

However, tile can be cold and hard on the feet! So, I wanted to add a rug with a tall enough pile to provide some comfort.

Slat Wall

I’ve been dying to do a slat wall SOMEWHERE in the house. I think the slat wall would look great in the laundry room while adding something unique to the design.

And that’s it for the E-Design for our laundry room makeover! To be honest, I’m itching to get started on the actual makeover now that I see what this room COULD be. But, I know I need to be patient since we are building our deck this summer.
